The Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Budapest brought the heat with temperatures of 95°F and higher. Pilots not only had to keep themselves cool but also had to keep a close eye on their aircraft’s engines making the task at hand even more difficult. The racetrack over the Danube river was also arduous for the pilots; they had a tough time staying fast and keeping their planes under 10 Gs.
On qualifying day, Michael had set backs that placed him in 14th and put him up for a challenging match against Matt Hall on race day, who had been faster than any of the pilots all week. Unfortunately, Goulian was not able to keep the speed up to beat Hall and placed 11th in Budapest.
“This was a good race to prove how important qualifying is with the new 2015 race format. I was not satisfied with my flying in Sunday’s race. I didn’t fly the airplane as fast as I could have. Trying not to get an Over-G slowed us down. I’m very happy with the team and the steps we’re making. I’m sure we’ll be faster and faster in the long term, and that’s what it’s all about,” explained Goulian.
The Final Four round was bursting with full throttled aggressive flying as pilots aimed for the podium. Budapest became a back-to-back win for Austria’s Hannes Arch, who won his very first Red Bull Air Race World Championship in Budapest. The shock of the weekend was Matt Hall not making the Final Four round and Canadian Pete McLeod out racing local Hungarian Peter Besenyei, proving he could compete in the heat to place fourth in Budapest.
