Cirrus was founded with the idea of creating an aircraft that never existed before—an aircraft with features and innovations that take the flying experience to an entirely different level. This spirit of unceasing innovation continues at Cirrus today and the result is the new Generation 5 SR22 and SR22T.


Generation 5 embodies everything that makes a Cirrus a Cirrus…and then some. Innovation. Sophistication. Luxury. And of course, unparalleled safety. It is truly the most Cirrus ever.


The fifth generation SR-Series lineup, is dominated by a dramatic increase in load carrying capability for these best-selling aircraft. Increasing the certified gross weight to 3600 lbs. (1,633 kg) for both SR22 and SR22T, this new utility and flexibility allows an extra person, substantial extra baggage or cargo all while carrying more fuel in both of these 5-seat aircraft.


The changes for Generation 5 make the SR22 and SR22T the highest in-class useful load aircraft available today. A standard SR22 not only achieves true "four-seat airplane that can carry four people and full fuel," but SR22 and SR22T models now have five seats total and can carry all five FAA-standard passengers non-stop and in comfort over 700 nautical miles.


Generation 5 is the name given to the airframe changes required to achieve the step-change improvement for the SR22/SR22T. The entire aircraft design was analyzed from spinner-to-tail and many parts and systems reengineered and redesigned to accommodate the increased airframe load, aerodynamic improvements, improved flight performance and the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System™ (CAPS.) Substantial testing, including a new series of CAPS parachute test drops, was conducted for validation. Significant changes for Generation 5 have been made to the CAPS system including an increased canopy size, a new rocket extraction system that propels the parachute upon activation, an advanced technology electrical rocket igniter and lighter and stronger construction materials. Other airframe upgrades included strengthening the carbon fiber, single part wing spar, the landing gear and a new flap system allowing extension to the first position at 150 knots.


This redesigned SR22/SR22T, the fifth generation of Cirrus aircraft, add a load carrying exclamation point to recent Cirrus innovations including: Cirrus Perspective™ avionics by Garmin®; Cirrus Known Ice Protection™; Perspective Global Connect™ satellite communications; 60/40 FlexSeating™; and the totally unique Cirrus Airframe Parachute System™ (CAPS).

The original inspiration for the whole-airplane parachute on the Cirrus airplane was a mid-air collision that could have led to tragedy. But instead it led to the creation of the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System – the most significant safety innovation in over a half-century of general aviation.

 

From the start of our company, each and every day, the profound passion for everyone at Cirrus is to create safer airplanes, safer pilots and safer skies. Not just for Cirrus pilots, but all pilots. Flying safely will always be our most fundamental mission.

 

The parachute system is designed to protect occupants in the event of an emergency by lowering the aircraft to the ground after deployment. CAPS revolutionized general aviation safety by providing an additional measure of safety to occupants, similar in theory to the role of seatbelts in automobiles. No other certified general aviation aircraft manufacturer in the world provides this safety feature as standard equipment.


In the event of an in-flight emergency, pulling the red CAPS handle on the ceiling inside the cockpit deploys a solid-fuel rocket out a hatch that covers the concealed compartment where the parachute is stored. As the rocket carries the parachute rearward from the back of the airplane, the embedded CAPS airplane harness straps release from the fuselage. Within seconds, the 65' diameter canopy will unfurl, controlling the aircraft rate of descent. The final landing is absorbed by the specialized landing gear, a roll cage and Cirrus Energy Absorbing Technology (CEAT™) seats.

Hypoxia Check and Automated Descent Mode

Never before have avionics integrated your well-being. If key strokes haven’t been made for a certain time dependent on altitude the avionics will ask, “Are you alert?”. If there is no acknowledgement after a few different messages the aircraft will automatically descend to a lower altitude.

Autopilot Stall Protection

At Cirrus, our top priority is safety, so we’re always working to make available to our pilots the best tools to make better, safer, aeronautical decisions. When we saw the tangible benefits of EVS (Enhanced Vision System), we decided to certify and offer EVS as an option for SR22 models sporting the Cirrus Perspective by Garmin integrated flight deck. Based on infrared technology pioneered in the military and law enforcement, EVS sensors allow pilots to see up to three times further through some low-visibility conditions like mist,

rain and the dark of night, giving pilots a real-time, unobstructed and hyper-realistic view of the terrain ahead. For pilots flying precision and non-precision approaches into challenging airports, or identifying clouds while flying VFR at night, EVS advances pilot situational awareness to levels never before realized in a single-engine piston aircraft.

Known Ice Protection

For years the Cirrus SR22 has been available with basic ice protection, meant only to buy pilots a bit of time and security while exiting an inadvertent icing encounter. It was never intended to allow pilots to deliberately penetrate visible moisture when icing is known or forecast. Too often, this lack of known icing capability hindered aircraft utility and dispatch rates.

The current Cirrus SR22 and SR22T models are available with Cirrus Factory Known Ice Protection - a TKS based weeping-wing anti-ice system that is equipped and certified for Flight into Known Icing conditions (FIKI).

The minute you activate the robust, FIKI-approved TKS system, you’ll know it’s different from the basic ice protection on non-FIKI aircraft. Cirrus Known Ice Protection is an actual FAA re-certification of the SR22 to permit pilots to legally fly into known icing conditions.

This certification required much more than adding an extra pump and fluid volume to the basic system. When activated, the Cirrus Known Ice Protection system thoroughly and evenly coats flight surfaces, including the vertical stabilizer and elevator tips, with anti-ice fluid. The FIKI-approved system incorporates new elements like a dynamic stall speed indication on the PFD, surface illumination lights with split prisms on either side of the aircraft that illuminate both the wings and horizontal stabilizer in low-light conditions, and backup pumps and filters for fault-tolerant and redundant operation.

With the two small nozzles positioned just below the windscreen, in addition to any fluid slung rearward by the propeller, the pilot is assured of an unobstructed forward view. Endurance for the system, now indicated on the Cirrus Perspective MFD, is increased to 150 minutes at Normal flow rates, 75 minutes when High is selected, and a new, Max rate has been added affording a total of 37.5 minutes of anti-ice capability, in two-minute bursts, during periods of higher accretion.

More importantly all systems are integrated and monitored by the Cirrus Perspective™ by Garmin® cockpit. For example: 1) The duration and range with the TKS fluid remaining is always clearly indicated 2) With XM weather icing forecasts and freezing levels are available 3) Inadequate flow rates or systems malfunctions are discovered and presented as an annunciation on the Primary Flight Display (PFD). All of which gives the pilot the information necessary to make informed decisions on the flight.

Cirrus again delivers increased aircraft safety and utility. With Known Ice Protection on the SR22 and SR22T, pilots can now launch or continue flight with the peace of mind that they’re both legal and safe when icing is forecast or present.

Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP) is a highly innovative new technology that address both “prevention” and “recovery”. ESP passively and unobtrusively corrects unusual flight attitudes, assisting without distracting from flying quality or enjoyment of the flight experience.

Key components and features of the Perspective ESP system are:

  • Operates when the Garmin GFC 700 autopilot has been disengaged, when hand flying the aircraft
  • Activates automatically whenever the airplane exceeds one or more flight parameters
  • Uses autopilot servos and sensors, yet operates even when the autopilot is turned off
  • Recognizes and helps correct excessive pitch attitude, roll attitude, or airspeed
  • Augments pilot vigilance: Assists, but does not take control
  • Can be overridden by the pilot at any time
  • Increases corrective pressure as exceedances move beyond safe limits
  • Gently returns the aircraft  flight within normal operating envelope

Satellite Phone 

Iridium Communications technology is integrated into the Cirrus Perspective Audio system to make calls in-flight through the cabin headsets, enabling pilot and passengers to make private or group calls. With this feature, call for a ride or rental car 30 minutes from your destination, make hotel reservations on a weather diversion or confirm a business meeting. Global Connect makes it easy to adjust when things don’t go according to plan.

Text Messaging

Send and receive text messages through the Cirrus Perspective system. Text messages are inputted through the Perspective keyboard and displayed on the MFD screen from wherever you are in the world2.
